Did you ever think that you could spike metabolism, boost energy and improve your movement health with cleaning? Skeptical? Then it’s time to read about an incredible group of housekeepers who agreed to participate in a particularly interesting study.
In the study, the housekeepers were divided into 2 different groups. The first group was told that their daily job was equivalent to physical fitness and each time they cleaned a hotel room, they were getting physical benefits. Yep, you read that right. For Group 1, their job didn’t change, just their mindset around how they were performing their daily tasks and having intention around their movement health. The second group was told nothing and they just performed their daily tasks as usual.
Can you guess the result after 30 days?
- Group 1- Lost weight, lowered their systolic blood pressure and decreased BMI.
- Group 2- No change (not shocking)
Incredibly, in the case of Group 1, self-awareness was more efficient than a personal trainer. We may not all work a full day of housekeeping, but most of us face the task of cleaning daily.
It seems that shifting your mindset to perceive movement – whether it be lifting weights at the gym or boxes from your garage – as contributing to your health, you can actually cause both physical and physiological changes in your body. But here’s the catch – self-awareness and visualization are key. Think about how you’re toning and training your body while you work, and those changes will become real.
Put it to the test. Read on for more benefits you can glean from cleaning. You may be surprised – and find that you have a little more swing in your sweep.
Takeaway: If clearing out pantries and reorganizing your garage sounds more like menial labor than meaningful movement, remember the ways that spring cleaning can be beneficial. Not only to your home, but to your muscles, mind and mentality. An hour or two spent dusting, decluttering or reorganizing will leave both you and your home feeling lighter, healthier, with more space for the good stuff.
